CAMPS

US Air Force 2020

Overview

Consolidated Air Mobility Planning System

Role

Lead (and solo) UX designer working with multiple engineering teams, project leadership, government partners, and end-users within USTRANSCOM to design ground-up application using Material UI and custom components to ensure usability, testability, iterability, and performance.

Gathered end-user input and built trust & confidence via regular on-site observational visits and weekly feedback sessions for ongoing and upcoming work.

Engaged in significant requirements gathering, management, refinement, and prioritization, including change request management and defects triage.

Initial Objectives

Upgrade technical stack of existing CAMPS application to cloud-based application built on React with improved performance, automated testing & QA.

Rebuild multiple siloed requests management systems built by multiple contractors as a single code base to facilitate cross-platform coordination and data access.

Solution

Use rebuilding effort as opportunity to fix errors and improve UX of existing application.

Consolidate duplicative application interfaces into single coherent user interface that serves all product lines.

Build architectural foundation (both technical and design-wise) for ambitious future efforts like consolidated planning and ML-based recommendations.

Engage in "diplomacy-through-design" with government stakeholders to evangelize iterative Agile software development practices with rapid value turnaround.

Impact

The program was discontinued in 2025 before reaching production, which is not uncommon for DoD modernization efforts as funding and priorities shift. Nevertheless, the architectural and UX groundwork I established sustained the program for five years after I left.
